(Makes about 1 ¾ cups; Takes about 30 minutes to make)
2 cups blanched hazelnuts (roast for about 10 minutes in a 400ºF oven)
¾ cup raw sugar
½ cup cocoa
2 tablespoons hazelnut oil
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/8 teaspoon salt
Pulse the cooled down nuts in a food processor ‘til a paste is formed. Add the sugar, cocoa, oil, vanilla and salt and pulse until all ingredients are well blended. Store in the refrigerator in a jar. Enjoy!!
Recently I bought some Nutella. I have not bought it before since being in Africa as it is an imported item. That means it’s expensive! A treat. I thought about all the ways it could be used, and googled to learn it can be stirred into coffee! Always a good idea here as there is no Starbucks or corner coffee shop that sells different yummy versions of a plain cup of coffee. I really liked the Nutella in coffee but consider the price too high to keep buying it. I discussed it with a friend who sent me this recipe of a homemade version of Nutella. The good thing about homemade is that you can adjust the sugar content to your own liking – or use an alternative sweetener. I tried maple syrup and enjoyed that. However, maple syrup is an import here too and defeats the purpose of budgeting. Hope you like homemade Nutella as much as I am learning to. You will need a food processor to make this.
