Where Wisdom is Found

Are you in a pickle, an uncomfortable season where nothing is going right? And, now, you need to know what to do next and you don’t think you have anyone whom you can ask for wise counsel.

Being in a pickle can be hard, this is true irrespective of who you are or who is around you. You may have the most wise people in your circle whom you can speak to, but ultimately any decisions you need to make are yours. Let’s face it, wise counsel from within your peer group may sound amazing, but it remains pretty limited. The counsel they give comes from their personal experiences, past, current and what they expect the future to be. There is no certainty to their counsel, or if it will work out the way they imagined. You can’t know it either.

Furthermore, along the way, if something changes, will they still be around to direct your steps ensuring you stay on the path they thought best? That’s asking a whole lot – of anyone – don’t you think? It puts a great expectation on another’s counsel if you think their directions are absolute. I wouldn’t want to counsel someone if they held me accountable for eventualities – the unforeseen circumstances of life.

For ongoing sustaining wisdom which will lead, direct, and guide us we need to look beyond mankind. Our friends, counselors, with the best intentions can only ever counsel us in a very limited way. They can only make recommendations based on their limited understanding of life. No-way can they speak into a situation with full and complete understanding of each person’s life. It’s just not possible.

Finding the wisdom we need irrespective of our dilemma is achievable, it can be found only when we are humble before God. The foundation of wisdom is established in our knowledge of Him. What shapes our worldview, and what and whom do we live for? What is His purpose for us when nothing makes sense?

Do you know what yours is? Really, do you know? Have you thought about it … Biblically? What does the Lord want you to do in your current dilemma? I know what He asks from each of us irrespective of the situation is to respond faithfully, and obediently. Most of the answers are found in the Word of God. If you do not know the answers, keep reading in His word to find them. When you know what He is telling you to do, ask Him for the strength to be able to carry out the actions He determines.

  • If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways (James 1:5-8).

  • Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD, and turn away from evil (Proverbs 3:5-7).
