Much attention is given to teenagers’ use of smartphones, email, Facebook, twitter and how this has changed, and will continue to change the way relationships are developed and grown. And, were we bold enough to admit it – we are not far behind in our usage of the internet and how this has changed the way we do relationships. Continual electronic communication with our group of friends confines us to our group. We learn very little about nuances in conversation – give and take of care through eye contact, and friendly touches of encouragement. Although the internet does allow for constant communication – and this can be a good thing when far from loved ones, it does close of the growth of community, and our personal growth. Closed to others outside and beyond the device that controls the way we interact, and with whom we interact.
How then do we open up the world of personal relationship building – the value of a group of real-time friends to our young people, to grow their friendship base, and encourage community? Consider inviting a group of young girls from your church for an overnight event, or for a weekend. It does not need to be a huge group, three to six is sufficient. Plan what you will, allow the activities to be the relationship building devices, besides cooking, baking and watching a movie, I thought of pom-pom rugs. They are fun and easy to make – and they do not take too long to put together.
What ideas and suggestions can you come up with to be intentionally involved in teaching young people the value of creativity, and practicing that in community?
