Inclusion! - Disability

One little girl’s delight in her new found freedom of mobility on the playground, as well as how her school friends respond to her teaches us so much about our own shortcomings. This is a delight to watch! It should leave you smiling! It should also cause you to think about those with disabilities in your community.

Do we embrace and include those who are different to us in the same way as these children do, or do we distance ourselves from those who are different to us? Not only those who, like this little girl, have lost a limb, but those who have more noticeable differences, particularly those with behavioral differences? Do we include them and do we teach those around us to include them too? What do our interactions with persons with disabilities say about who we are?

What about your church – do they welcome the disabled – not only those with prosthetic limbs, but those in wheel chairs too? What about those with cognitive impairments and severe disabilities? How does your church reach out to them, and to their families? Do they?

Consider the delight and the joy this young girl shows in group interaction – how she responds to participating in their activities. How much sweeter life is when you can do it – walking hand in hand.
