For a busy single mom (or a mom with a busy home and very active children) we strongly encourage her to plan. Planning, and organization of her home, and her life will bring its rewards. Yes, it will take time to plan and organize, and to strategize, but the rewards are functioning in the demands of her life. I am not a rushed and busy mom but I know the rewards of order in my life. I can have a whole lot going on, but when I know what is required of me and where things are, it reduces the time to find them. Order and organization keeps a home tidy, and requires easier cleaning – it does!
As much as this is true for our homes and the organizing of our lives, it is more essential to get our spiritual house in order – the overflow being our spiritual well-being. Most married moms do not need to consider the spiritual leadership of their family – this is their husband’s responsibility. For a single mom, it is hers. This responsibility is more important than a swept and vacuumed floor. It is more important than a perfectly made bed, a coordinated bedroom or living room.
However, for a single mom an organized home allows her to spend more time focusing on the essentials – life and godliness. Hers, and her children’s.
Last week we introduced a catechism and suggested she work through this with her family. Recently I counseled a mom to write out the catechism questions on a 3 x 5 card and to make a duplicate set – one for the car and one for the kitchen. The question should be on the front of the card with one or two of the verses written out on the back. The cards can be used during commuting, or cooking! Questions can be asked, and answered, and the verses memorized. Discussions can take place on the importance of the questions, how they apply to life, with practical discussions on how to live them out.
The catechism is downloadable and printable from: cdn.desiringgod.org/pdf/blog/A_Baptist_Catechism-new.pdf
Here is an example:

So, whatever you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. 1 Corinthians 10:31
You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore Psalm 16:11
Comment: ‘Glorify’ does not mean make glorious. It means [to] reflect or display as glorious. Other words you could use for ‘end’ are ‘goal’ or ‘purpose’.
Question 2: What is the chief end of man?
Answer: Man’s chief end is to glorify God and to enjoy Him forever.
