Paperwhites (paperwhite narcissus) are a simple and elegant flower, and so very easy to grow indoors. Buying bulbs from a good nursery is important. Speak to the staff; ask them for recommendations on what to do, on how to plant the bulbs. Find out as much as possible, ask about other bulbs too. This may be the start of a new hobby, and new friendships. Indoor plants make wonderful gifts. Another benefit to befriending the nursery staff is developing of community. They will get to know you, and you will get to know them.

How to Plant Paperwhites Indoors

Use a shallow bowl (glass allows you to see root growth and observe water levels) without drainage holes, about 3 – 4 inches deep. Fill about halfway with crushed rock, pebbles or marbles. Place a layer of bulbs close to each other on top of the pebbles – roots down. Make sure you secure the bulbs with extra pebbles. Do not cover the top of the bulbs.

Add water until it reaches just below the bottom of the bulbs. The bulbs should not sit in water – if they do, they will rot. Place the bowl away from direct sunlight and check regularly to ensure there is enough water in the bowl. After about 3 weeks, move the bowl to a more sunny area. Keep a check on the water, and watch them grow. The stalks may get a bit tall depending on how much sunlight they get. If the stalks start to lean, tie a ribbon around the stalks. For delayed blooming place a few bulbs in the center of the bowl, after a week place a few more bulbs around the center bulbs, and then a week later add a few more bulbs in an outer circle.

Paperwhites are fragrant, and will scent the room they are in.

Enjoy!
